I spent a little time away from comics. I took time to think, reflect, pack boxes, and lift them. I did this over and over and over and, yes, over. Then, when everything was complete, I found more things to pack that were tucked away in forgotten places, and did that over and over and over.
It was quite the move. Did I mention that there were historic storms and flooding during all of this? Yes, fun was had by all.
I lived in a third floor apartment that has no elevator. My watch recorded over 160 flights of stairs that were climbed. It couldn’t have been more delighted, my watch. It loves it when I exert myself beyond endurance. It tells me “I’m killing it”.
Do not worry! I relaxed in between massive workout sessions by going to work and standing all day. I’m very sore in muscles I didn’t know that I had and sleep deprived, but I can still type. That’s the important thing.
Let’s get on with the comics, shall we?
This comic reflects the current state of my brain. I expect to be back at full capacity in a year or two. Maybe. Math is beyond me at the moment.
Ok, this is an oldie. We can see that it’s an oldie because Penny is wearing a mask. There’s not much that dates a comic, but a mask is one of them.
One of the most thrilling things about a non-thrilling job is having just enough power to right a wrong. If there is a superhero in the retail world, it’s Price Adjuster Woman.
We’ll have to work on a better name.
Some stores have superior break rooms. Often, these break rooms aren’t used to their full potential. It’s kind of a display to show employees that the companies care. There’s just never enough time to really hang out in them. Don’t touch the display.
Ah, the random day off. Having a day off in the middle of the week can be great if you want to make a doctor’s appointment. Then again, who wants to spend their day off at a doctor’s appointment? Ideally, we’d get an additional day off for the doctor because, as they keep saying, “our staff is our most valuable resource”. Surely they want their most valuable resource to be well-maintained, right?
Wrong. They lie.
I’ve been in this situation many times. Management goes from saying how they are going to be picky and hire the right people to hiring whoever will show up. The realization that the talent pool is also being picky about who they work for never occurs to them. Often, people they would’ve passed on wind up being the best employees, much to their surprise.
While I was moving, I received complaints that I was running older comics. People are very vocal about their free entertainment. It reminded me of this strip.
Claremont has been around forever. He’s one of the oldest characters in this strip. He was drawn a number of presidential administrations ago.
I’ve also worked with quite a few staff members who say that they prefer to work with people, then proceed to be extremely rude to them. There are also staff members who say they hate working with people and avoid them. Why they applied to a job that is only working with people when they hate working with people remains a mystery.
I wind up hating these people. I prefer not to work with them.
I have a rule of thumb. If you are briefly helping out in an unfamiliar area you will immediately get a cranky customer who wants specific information about that area.
This is also a rule. Those who actually read signs misunderstand them.
I will be posting more regularly, but for now I’m going to sleep on a cake of ice.
As a former military brat, I relate to the moving thing far too much.
Also, your observations about customer behavior could and should be compiled into a subsection of Murphy's Law: The Corollaries of Working Retail.
Speaking of reading comprehension, I always thought our sale signs were backwards. Instead of
