As a former military brat, I relate to the moving thing far too much.

Also, your observations about customer behavior could and should be compiled into a subsection of Murphy's Law: The Corollaries of Working Retail.

Speaking of reading comprehension, I always thought our sale signs were backwards. Instead of

𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗘

50% Off

ᴹᵒⁿᵈᵃʸ ᵒⁿˡʸ

it needed to be

𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬

50% Off

ᵇᶦᵍ ˢᵃˡᵉ

I would love fifty percent off of Monday.

I absolutely detest moving 🤨... So much so that when we moved to our current address 2 yrs ago I told everyone that the next time I move will be to go 6 feet underground 😉

Many thought/think I was joking.... But I'm truly not 😁😂😜

I really truly and completely detest moving house 😵‍💫

Love the comic strips 😁

I hate moving so much that I lived for 30 years in an apartment I hated in a crappy part of town, rather than move.

When I did move I took my clothes, some essential things, and paid the landlord to trash everything else, i.e. 90% of the contents of the apartment.

Wow😱

10yrs is the longest I've managed to stay in one place.... In my entire life... We moved a lot growing up, and now my brother is the only one of us kids who has stayed in the same place for long- he's been in his house now for over 25 yrs... Lucky him ☺️

We moved every year until I was 8, which I think is the origin of my dislike for moving.

Stephen Beals's avatar

That would definitely do it. I only moved once as a kid, but I still hate it.

Next time I move, it's going to be in a pine box.

I like the idea of leaving one place and going to another. This whole "take your stuff with you" business is the part that's a drag.

There is refreshing humor in everything you write and draw. Thanks.

A sincere thank you (albeit, a tad late due to the follow up to moving that is unpacking, but sincere nonetheless!)

I am in hospital at the moment, I thought I would be bored off my ... Then I found your comic strips, they are hilarious, remind me of my younger days in various retail jobs and trying really hard not to laugh too loud because it's 1am here 😁🤫😂

These are so good, you sum up everything in just a few pictures, the feel of the place, I am even remembering things long forgotten like;

the automatic bread slicer where you could, for a reason none of us could understand, set it soo thin that if the bread hadnt collapsed, slice the bread thinner than an A4 sheet of paper,

or my summer in a bookshop where customers would lose their minds over sale items not being as cheap as they wanted it to be, as though the word " sale" meant that the books were priced to suit their personal idea of what cheap should be and not the company just shifting stock as prices where they still make a profit, to make way for the new best sellers.

Brilliant, please keep making these, they are excellent.

I am working my way backwards through them all!

That is extremely rewarding. Thank you so much. I’m very sorry that you are discovering the strip while in the hospital but I have to admit that I’ve been able to read quite a bit when I’m there, so I guess there’s that.

I also have to admit that I’ve stayed away from the bread slicer. Now I have to try it for research purposes.

I too tend do get a lot of reading done when I've had to stay in hospital, which used to be quite often 😭 but I've managed to stay away for almost 2 yrs now ...sooo good 😊

But less reading time 😞

Tas's avatar

I hope your stay isn't too long and you make a quick recovery 😁

I did the same thing during one of my hospital stays if the past... It was a joy for me, which I continue to enjoy minus the hospital stays 😃

Thank you, that's really sweet, I am back home , finally and don't need to go back until the end of July.

Now I am just struggling with my IT idiocy on how to do the paid subscription.

I only joined substack to read more of Stephen's comic strips, and now I have added other subscriptions ( free) but would like to pay for this , substack is it?

It kerps telling me I can't subscribe in the app- go to the website, and when I go to website it keeps saying error loading page in the checkout. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I wonder if Stephen has written / drawn art about people struggling with the IT systems in stores 😁( still working backwards through all of them)

Stephen Beals's avatar

I did a looooong time ago. I wish I could help on the paid subscription. So far, Substack just tells me that you just need to go to their help section. Not very helpful.

wolfbanana's avatar

I did it! 😁

I had to turn the vpn thingy off. 🤦‍♀️🤷😂

So very much appreciated. Thank you!

Your old ones are the best except the ones with masks. They trigger my PTSD

Your work is extremely laughable. Xxx

I could read StBeals all day, but I gotta go to work… Oh! Bedtime already?

Stephen Beals's avatar

I somehow reset the poll. Oh well, just know that most people won’t help me with the couch.

I am so very happy that I am old and feeble(ish) enough to pay other people (generally young strapping types) to move things for me. Now I just need to figure out how to avoid the packing part...
